On Tuesday the 24th January 1928, Dan Clifford opened his New Star Theatre at Unley. At a cost of £39,000 it was described in the Everyones magazine as Clifford's most ambitious project to date (Feb 1, 1928 p. 7). With a seating capacity of 2000 patrons it certainly was built on a grand scale, with a nod to Spanish Architecture, it was described as the 'last thing in modern design' (ibid). This New Star Theatre was built to replace the old Star Theatre, which was originally the Unley Picture Palace, then the Unley Wondergraph followed by Unley Star and later the Unley Odean (Walker, 1995. p. 131).
